So this year Ethan decided he wanted a pirate party ... well that is after I convinced him that it would be hard for me to create anything 'fun' for a Nascar or Superhero party. Is that terrible of me?
Knowing my biggest goal for his birthday was to complete a full size quilt for his bed and 're-do' his room with a robot theme (matching the quilt) I didn't have quite as much time to pull together the whole 'pirate package' like I knew I would want. So when I spotted this great printable kit from an Etsy seller I snagged it. It was reasonably priced and while yes, I could have created something similar ... it was SO worth the time savings and it was really cute.
His birthday started with a room full of balloons and a Happy Birthday banner greeting him. Then M-n-M waffles made by Daddy. Then we took him on a surprise trip to the mall. Just outside Build-A-Bear I let him open his first present, a Darth Vader suit fit for a bear. So he created a black 'Darth Vader' bear.
Do you think he liked it? :D

Then we let him pick where he wanted to go for lunch. His first response? McDonald's. Matt laughed and I said, are you sure? If you could pick anywhere that would be it? He quickly came to his senses (thank goodness) and picked Red Robin.
After lunch we came home for a rest due to someone getting up 6 times the night before.
Once he was up from his rest, I set to work on re-doing his room. I purged some items, removed some old wall art, replaced it with new wall art AND put the new quilt on his bed. He loves it. There will be a post dedicated to the robot room, but if you haven't seen the quilt you can see a very detailed post about its making here.

Then we let him open presents from us.

After dinner it was party time. Typically with just family, we have about 18 people. For a lot of different reasons, we only ended up with 4 guests for his party. A little disappointing to me, but Ethan didn't seem to notice so all was well.

We had 'buried treasure' cupcakes (chocolate cupcakes with either a Hershey's kiss or Reese's PB cup inside) and ice cream. There was to be a pirate ship, but sadly it sunk before the party got started.

Throw in some pirate do-rags, an inflatable parrot, plastic swords and tattoos and well it was one wild party ...

Captain 'No Beard' then had to wash up and try out his new bath toys. They scored 2 thumbs up!

At the end of the night Ethan told me, "I had a really fun birthday, Mom." And that told me everything had turned out just right!

Happy Monday!

Ah! I LOVE it!! He is so stinking adorable & you made awesome decorations!!! So cleaver. The pics of him are just precious - you can tell he's having fun. Nice job Mama!!
looks like a very fun party R! You do such a nice job. Funny how we parents have such big expectations for a perfect party, glad it turned out to be just that!
I've got one 5 yr old party coming up and I don't really have a solid plan, but i will trust it will turn out just fine as well!
Awwww....we just saw the Darth Vader costume this weekend. This looks like a really, really fun day--it may have not been what you counted on, but it sounds like it was perfect to him! The pirate theme turned out SO cool!
On a side note, Seth loves Star Wars, too!
Cute party. This is our 'on' year for birthday parties. First up a jump rope party and then Ash keeps changing her mind, over the rainbow, cat, princess. We'll see. They're a lot of work but when you get a big smile out of them it's all worth it!
looks like a fun party and E sure looks happy. Good job!
So incredibly fun and sweet, Andrea! Great work. And E just looked so happy and adorable in his pirate getup. And his bedroom is totally precious.
Awesomeness!! I love the cupcakes! And looks like he made out with tons of treasure! :)
