So several months ago, we had the 'what do you want to be for Halloween' talk and after a few options, pirate quickly became the #1 choice. And it stayed that way. I knew I could probably pull off a pirate costume fairly easily ... but what I didn't think about was the fact that I would have to pull it off during the busiest 2 weeks of sewing this year.
{I think Red Beard may have scurvy ... don't be alarmed.}
About a week before Halloween Ethan says he's changed his mind and wants to be a Ninja. I've already been bookmarking and mentally preparing for a pirate ... and well, I should have gone with the Ninja because ... hello!! How easy would that have been (think black sweats and a head wrap ;). But no, I said we were sticking with the pirate. And thanks to a great stop at Goodwill ... a pretty great pirate costume came together for under $15 and less than an hour of 'sewing/re-pourposing.'
Here is Captain "Red Beard" Ethan::
The shirt/vest was a combo at Goodwill for the 'color of the day' price of $2. The vest had a lovely teal/black print going on, but the black lining worked perfect for a pirate. A quick removal of the buttons, enlarging the button holes and sewing on some 'golden' wooden buttons. The shirt was missing a button, so I moved the collar button to the missing spot. Easy Peasy.

The pants were size 10. Perfect. I added elastic to the existing hem by making a small hole to thread it through and then re-stitched it closed. This gave the 'billowy' effect. Then I took the waist in. Again, easy peasy Lemon Squeezy.
The 'skull rag' (serious, don't know the name for this one) is a simple 20"x20" square of on-hand fabric with the edges serged.

{Red Beard & Grandma. No coaching necessary for these pirate faces.}
An 1/8 YD (=.37) of red satin for a sash.
Pirate Hat, sword & eye patch from party supply shop.
Red rain boots with the pants over the top.

{Red Beard & Aunt Summer. Red Beard is distracted by the invention called 'the television.'}
Kids Halloween party hosted by our great friends (and attended by great friends) on Saturday afternoon.

Pumpkin carving & homemade pizza on Saturday night.
Krispy Kreme "Halloween" doughnut surprise on the way to church.
A nap for Red Beard & his mama after church.
Homemade chili to warm the pirate belly.
Gray long johns and a perfectly mild evening and you've got yourself a pirate ready to conquer 2 hours of trick-or-treating with our neighbors, Tinkerbell, Ariel & Buzz Lightyear.
Grateful for a weekend where VERY LITTLE sewing got done, but a lot of fun living was done!
Happy Wednesday!

He was such a cute pirate! Loved his costume!! The ninja idea was popular amongst the boys this year. B mentioned that in our costume pickin' process too.
He was a cute pirate indeed! I loved seeing the kids all dressed up, I hope this is a yearly tradition now.
